The TUSMGP Health Sciences Mentorship Organization serves to connect local high schoolers with TUSM students to foster and grow interest in the STEM field from early on. Members are primarily from the TUSM MBS and MPH programs and we work with the Boston Latin Academy to host weekly workshops on Wednesdays at their campus. We hope to promote engagement in STEM through fun and applied topics which include emergency medicine skills, a brain dissection lab, an immunology lab/antibiotic resistance lab, and more.
In addition to leading weekly workshops, our program allows mentors and mentees to connect one-on-one. It has been shown that having a peer mentor is related to higher academic performance, greater personal growth and awareness, and improved social skills and emotional wellbeing.
Your support will help provide local high schoolers with early exposure to the STEM and the various subfields and potential areas of work. Reaching our goal will allow us to budget for weekly workshops hosted at Boston Latin Academy. For example, this year we hosted an “Emergency Medical Skills” workshop which requires equipment ranging from CPR mannequins, bag-valve masks, and tourniquets. Since the students enjoyed the workshop so much, we will be holding a second iteration of the workshop by introducing them to the fundamentals of CPR.
Your support will also allow students at Tufts and the Boston Latin Academy to connect in a mentor-mentee relationship. High school can be a difficult time with managing competing obligations and making pivotal decisions about the future. Having a mentor who can offer support through their shared experiences can make a big difference in one’s personal growth and path.
