TUPIT: Support for Tufts University’s Incarcerated College Students in Prison and Reentering Society
As the Tufts University Prison Initiative (TUPIT) continues to celebrate the graduation of our first cohort of incarcerated students earning their bachelor’s degree in Civic Studies from Tufts in January, we are raising money to be able to support these students when they come home. The nationally recognized Tufts MyTERN college and reentry program provides opportunities for students coming home from prison to continue their education on campus with robust reentry support. It is a wonderful program, but it is also challenging because returning to society is challenging! We are asking for your help as we resource students in to run this year-long community-based program.
If we have learned anything about the reentry experiences of our students after prison, it is that as significant as the degree may be, people still face challenges in basic survival needs – housing, employment, and a sense of community. To manage applications for housing and employment and to function in community, understanding technology and finance is crucial and eases the stress of adjustment to the world outside. Being part of MyTERN provides this educational foundation but even more significant, it fosters a sense of belonging for people home after long incarcerations.
We are now asking for your help to build out these reentry resources that TUPIT has become known for so that we can welcome and support people at an even higher level. Your donations will go toward supporting skills-acquisition in technology; a new financial literacy curriculum; fellowships for MyTERN graduates serving as coaches for their recently home peers; transportation to and from college. Thank you for contributing to the value of this program to these students and graduates.
