771 million people don’t have clean water close to home (WHO/UNICEF, 2021). Tufts Engineers Without Borders (EWB) has been working to reduce this number.
Founded in 2004, Tufts EWB has collaborated with communities across the globe to engineer sustainable solutions. Over the past 5 years we’ve focused on clean water access projects in Nicaragua and Malawi. From designing implementation plans to drilling boreholes, over 100 Tufts students have contributed to these efforts. Your donations will help make these projects a reality.
In our community in Solomoni, Malawi, 1500 students are losing vital educational time from a
lack of water access in school. In April, our implementation plan for a water distribution
network to provide clean-water access in school was approved. A piping system powered by a
solar-pump will provide a sustainable solution to our community’s needs for years to come.
Construction on the project has already begun, and six Tufts students traveled in late
August to assist with the construction. Despite this, we are still missing the final funds to finish
the construction of the project.
The Nicaragua project has designed and implemented a new water tower that is providing safe, clean drinking water in the town of Silvio Mayorga. To follow up on the sustainability and functionality of the water tower, the final part of this project is monitoring and evaluation. Records about water access or water-related illness will be reviewed, the community water board and general community will be interviewed, and a water sample quality test will be completed. The results of this will be evaluated to ensure that the water tower has, and will continue to have, a positive effect on the over 200 people relying on this water.
Your contribution will not only support these important causes but also help realize the dreams and work of past, present, and future Tufts students.
Thank you so much for your support!
Thank you so much for your generous donation! With your support, Tufts EWB can support its clean water projects in both Malawi and Nicaragua.
In Malawi, your donation will help finalize costs associated with the installed water distribution network for a local school in Solomoni. In Nicaragua, your donation will fund our evaluation process, where we ensure that the installed water tower is safe and effective for the Silvio Mayorga community.
With thanks,
