About

Candle-lighting. Light on the Hill. Illumination.

The name has changed through the decades, but the heart of this tradition remains the same. According to legend, when Charles Tufts donated the land for the university to be built upon, he said he would put “a light on that hill.”

Each year on the night before Commencement, graduating seniors gather on the Hill to light their candles, one from another; marking the end of their time as students and beginning their lives as Tufts alumni, knowing they carry this light with them into the world.

Be the Light.

This year, 1,602 students participated in their Illumination Ceremony, celebrating their last night as Tufts students before proudly joining the alumni community.

Your gift to the Illumination Fund for Financial Aid provides much needed support for today's students, who are the light on the Hill. And, you honor the class of 2022 as they carry their light into the world

1,602 donors secures $50,000 from Lori Winters Samuels (J81, A22P) and family.
